This seminar will introduce the audience to the concepts and applications of distributed fiber-optic sensing for well and reservoir monitoring. An overview of distributed temperature, strain and acoustic sensing, commonly referred to as DTS, DSS and DAS, will provide a basic understanding of the principles of fiber-optic distributed measurements and the types of instrumentation and sensing cables used to make these measurements.
Typical onshore and offshore deployment techniques for permanently installed optical sensors as well as for occasional (intervention-based) monitoring will be addressed. Examples will be presented which demonstrate the value of distributed sensing for measuring production and injection profiles, diagnosing well and completion integrity problems, monitoring matrix and fracture stimulation operations, and providing indication of key reservoir events such as of water, gas or steam breakthrough in naturally flowing or enhanced recovery wells. The cost and economic benefit of fiber optics will be briefly discussed.
Dennis Dria is president and petroleum technology advisor for Myden Energy Consulting, PLLC (2010-present). He has 36 years of experience in the oil & gas industry, including 9 years with the Standard Oil Company and 21 years with Shell, in a combination of upstream and downstream oil and gas R&D and E&P operating division positions.
At the time he left Shell in 2010, he was a Staff Research Engineer working in the areas of fiber-optic technology development, fiber-optic data management and integration and technology implementation for well and reservoir monitoring. Prior to this he was Engineering Advisor for Shell’s Global Implementation Team for Reservoir Surveillance Technologies during which he identified appropriate in-well monitoring technologies for Shell “top 70” global development projects, resulting in field surveillance plans for more than 20 major E&P projects. He also was Shell’s Global Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Production Logging and Permanent Sensing and SME for Mud Logging.
Under Myden Energy Consulting, PLLC, Dennis advises clients on the "right-fit" technology to provide key data and information which result in actionable recommendations for appropriate implementation timing and methods, and assists in deployment, data management, information extraction and interpretation. He has completed more than 20 consulting projects for 16 industry clients, including onshore unconventional gas and oil, deep-water dry tree and subsea wells/fields, and has developed and taught 4 fit-for-purpose short courses.
Dr. Dria earned his BS in Physics and Mathematics from Ashland University (1977) and his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin (1989). He is author or coauthor of 23 US patents and 15 technical publications and is a contributing editor to the current SPE Petroleum Engineering Handbook. A 30+ year member of the SPE, he has chaired the SPE International Continuing Education Committee and the SPE-Gulf Coast Section Continuing Education Committee, served as technical committee member for the 2010 SPE Annual Technology Conference and Exhibition as chair of the Production Monitoring & Control technical subcommittee, served as a technical program member on several SPE Forums and Applied Technology Workshops, including the SPE Forum for Fields of the Future (2005) and the SPE Applied technology Workshops on Intelligent Completions (2008) and Reservoir Monitoring (2009), and chaired the SPE Applied Technology Workshops on Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing for Well and Reservoir Monitoring (2009-2013). Between 2008 and 2013 he gave 12 invited presentations at engineering conferences and workshops, including the conference keynote address at the 2011 International Conference on Reservoir Surveillance and Management, Xi’an, China. As 2011-2012 Distinguished Lecturer for the Society of Petroleum Engineers, he delivered his lecture on E&P Applications of Fiber-Optic Technologies to 25 audiences in 15 countries.
