The increasing demand for production of oil and gas continues and for sustainability purposes, basic sustainability principles shall be considered for the future of our industry. The oil and gas industry has regarded, and some companies have adopted, the Brundtland Commission definition of Sustainable Development as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”, which was officially adopted 21 years ago at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

This webinar will be presenting how these principles fit and have fit into the E&P activities and also it will present an internal communication tool that is used for getting CSR into all parts of the organization by explaining why Maersk Drilling finds CSR important to a modern business and how it is done from strategy down to actual tools and guidelines in one comprehensive poster overview.


Fernando L. Benalcazar
is Vice President of Global Implementation and VP Latin America for Equitable Origin, the world’s first independent social and environmental certification, certificate trading and ecolabel system for oil and gas exploration and production, a company based in New York, Bogota and Quito.

In this role, Fernando has responsibility for leading a team of functional specialists, providing leadership on implementation of EO Certification System for clients ‘senior management, establishing long-term partnerships with key stakeholders; and promoting sustainability culture, innovation and commitment among its clients.

Benalcazar has more than 21 years of leadership experience in management, community affairs, EHS, field operations, corporate responsibility and challenging engineering and project development.

Fernando joined Equitable Origin in July 2011 from APDProyectos and Tanganyika Oil and Gas where he spent 4 years in Syria and Ecuador, most recently as Vice President Corporate Affairs and EHS.  Prior to these companies, with EnCana as Director of EHS where he served for almost 7 years in France, Canada and Ecuador; and with Occidental Oil and Gas Corporation for almost 9 years where he served in several EHS and community affairs roles in Oman, United States, Venezuela and Ecuador.

In 1997, he helped establishing Occidental´s EHS Management System worldwide, from inception to implementation auditing; in 2004, he contributed to a new Corporate Responsibility Policy within EnCana focusing on governance, sustainability, stakeholder engagement, community programs, social risk assessment and safety processes. 

Benalcazar holds a Master degree in Civil Engineering from COPPE-Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) in the United States, Past-President of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) in Ecuador, Director in SPE Ecuador and member of SPE´s Sustainability Committee.


Michael Frederik Ellekjaer
is Head of Corporate Social Responsibility in Maersk Drilling where he joined in 2009 recruited to establish the new CSR function.  Maersk Drilling supports global oil and gas production by providing high-efficiency drilling services to oil companies around the world.   In recent years received a lot of praise for their CSR work, internally in the A.P. Moller Maersk group and externally in the industry amongst peers and customers.
 
Michael leads a team of specialists within CSR while also having the overall responsibility for coordinating CSR efforts within other functions  i.e. working with the environmental team, legal compliance officers, procurement etc and also takes a leading role in the overall APMM sustainability efforts.

Due to these and other merits, Michael sits on the SPE Sustainability Committee and a member of the IPIECA Social Responsibility working group, and Michael is also a sought after speaker on the topic of CSR, especially regarding how to make CSR strategically relevant, the integration of CSR into the business and the change management needed to succeed.
 
Formerly Michael was a management consultant focusing on business strategy and organizational transformation.  Michael was instrumental to tripling the size of the consultancy where he was an equity partner from 2002 to 2008.  Michael has held a number of honorary offices and as member of various boards of directors.  In 2007 Michael took an executive MBA from Copenhagen Business School where Michael ended in top 5 with highest grades in all strategy classes and the final strategy thesis.  By education Michael is an army officer including having served in Bosnia.
