Frequently Asked Questions

What is an MTA webcast?

MTA webcasts are designed to offer online learning options to township officials who are unable to travel to MTA educational events due to distance, cost and/or schedule conflicts. Our goal is to maximize learning opportunities for township officials throughout Michigan.

While township officials will still have the option to attend workshops on-site in a face-to-face setting, MTA will also offer online webcasts of selected workshops. MTA webcasts provide a convenient, affordable continuing education option for busy officials, who can now take advantage of educational programs right in the comfort and convenience of their township hall, office, local library or even at home!

Two “webcast” options are available:

•    live webcasts:  Real-time streaming over the Internet while the class is being conducted at another location.

•    on-demand webcasts:  Downloading an archived recording of the class following the event (webcast is typically available within one business day after the live event is finished).

The length of the webcasts vary; check the program list for broadcast times. Most webcasts will be 75 minutes or less.

Continuing education credits may be offered upon completion of either the live or on-demand (archived) sessions. Please visit the UPCOMING and ON-DEMAND pages to view details on the webcasts available for viewing.

For more information, contact the MTA Education Center at (517) 321-6467 or e-mail: education@michigantownships.org.

How does a webcast work?

If you’re planning to participate in a webcast, first test your computer and Internet connectivity to verify that the system will work properly for you.

Depending on the results, you may be required to download a program or update your software to ensure complete functionality; see System Requirements for more information.

For a live webcast

(1)    Register online for the webcast a minimum of 24 hours prior to the scheduled date and time. You will receive a confirmation e-mail, which contains a link and password for access, along with instructions for logging in. If registering by fax or mail, allow a minimum of five business days for your order to be processed and an e-mail confirmation sent to you.

NOTE: Each registration entitles an individual OR township/municipality to ONE computer log-in, limited to ONE “live webcast” registration. The link and password that you receive should NOT be shared with others; users’ names and e-mail addresses will be verified for security purposes. A Group License is available for more than one township/municipality wishing to view a webcast together at one location; contact MTA for rates and details.

(2)    On the scheduled date, log onto the website at least 10 minutes prior to the start time to ensure that your computer is able to stream the webcast. Once logged in, you may view the presentation online to watch and hear the speaker, as well as simultaneously view any slides being presented. Handouts and other information will also be available at this time.

(3)    Questions related to the workshop content may be submitted during the live broadcast via: education@michigantownships.org (or click on the word bubble located on the bottom menu of the webcast player to ask a question). All questions will be answered; however, due to time constraints, some questions may not be answered during the live broadcast. Presenters will follow up later via the user’s e-mail address.

For an on-demand webcast:

(1)     Register online at any time. Once your registration has been approved (typically within minutes if registering by credit card or for a free webcast), you will receive a confirmation e-mail, which contains a link and password for access, along with instructions for logging in. If registering by fax or mail, allow a minimum of five business days for your order to be processed and for an e-mail confirmation to be sent to you.

NOTE: Each registration entitles an individual OR township/municipality to ONE computer log-in, limited to ONE “on-demand” webcast. The link and password that you receive should NOT be shared with others; users’ names and e-mail addresses will be verified for security purposes. A Group License is available for more than one township/municipality wishing to view a webcast together at one location; contact MTA for rates and details.

(2)    Once logged in using the link and password provided in your confirmation e-mail, you may view the presentation online to watch and hear the speaker, as well as simultaneously view any slides being presented. Handouts and other information will also be available at this time.

Audio-only Option:  Please note that an “audio-only” webcast (without video) is available for users with a slower connection. For those with high-speed Internet, the video option will also be available “on-demand.”

 What is the cost?

Rates vary depending on the topic and length of broadcast. Some informational webcasts are available at no charge, while educational webcasts have a fee associated with them. Please click on Upcoming Webcasts or On-Demand Webcasts for details. NOTE: No refunds can be given on any webcast once the transaction has processed and an access code has been sent.
