Many start-ups and small companies don't have the luxury of a separate Human Resources department.  Managers wear many hats and HR responsibilities are often delegated to the controller, office manager, or other manager who has had no formal training and who is now the HR department. Complicating matters even more is the fact that managers have more and more demands on their time leaving even less time to consider the employment law aspects of the many workplace issues. Employees they supervise and manage are also more sophisticated and knowledgeable about their rights.

This program will focus on the hiring process, record keeping, paying employees and privacy issues.

Issues to be addressed:

  • Using an employment application
  • Applicant or employee medical and health information
  • Basic I-9 Compliance
  • The difference between exempt and non-exempt employees
  • When overtime is required
  • What is compensatory work time
  • NLRA control over the non-union workplace
  • Controlling employee use of social media
