August 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM EDT

The fact is that the ombudsman is authorized to come into your assisted living community. This program will lay out the reasons and the authority for these visits. Assisted living providers need this information so they do not inadvertently send their ombudsman away. Instead, learn about ways that you may want to get to know and partner with your ombudsman. Consultants Corner: HR Topics (Members Only)

May 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM EDT
In the last year, the number of private sector discrimination filings increased by a staggering 15 percent, the largest increase in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's 44-year history. What's worse, these numbers do not reflect the further deterioration of the economy in 2009. Needless to say, with more people out of work, employers need to better prepare to respond to individuals who might be financially motivated to explore their legal options. Based on these circumstances, this month's Consultants Corner will address employee disciplinary issues, including some suggested policies and procedures to better defend your facility from any so-motivated individuals.

Ethics and Outcomes

June 23, 2009 at 2:00 PM EDT
As care providers, much of what we do is dictated by regulatory controls that have been placed upon us to gain "ethical and social compliance." Applying the original purpose of the regulations (ethics-based decisions and compliance), this program will explore the potential outcomes and benefits of sharing your company's ethics philosophy via a training and education format with staff, residents and families.

Legal

Surrogate Medical Decision Making

July 14, 2009 at 2:00 PM EDT
End-of-life decisions are some of the most important decisions a resident can make. It is vital that this confusing area of law is understood so residents are given the opportunity to make end-of-life decisions and that these are carried out. It is also important for facilities to understand who has the authority to make medical treatment decisions as improper decision-making can lead to survey citations, as well as civil and criminal consequences.

July 15, 2009 at 2:00 PM EDT
The phrase "risk benefit analysis" has been used increasingly as facilities struggle to fulfill gradual dose reductions and provide quality care delivery. A "risk benefit analysis" expands beyond simple gradual dose reductions. Understanding the process of risk benefit can help a facility focus on proactive quality improvement processes.
