Consultants Corner: HR Topics (Members Only)

May 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM EDT
In the last year, the number of private sector discrimination filings increased by a staggering 15 percent, the largest increase in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's 44-year history. What's worse, these numbers do not reflect the further deterioration of the economy in 2009. Needless to say, with more people out of work, employers need to better prepare to respond to individuals who might be financially motivated to explore their legal options. Based on these circumstances, this month's Consultants Corner will address employee disciplinary issues, including some suggested policies and procedures to better defend your facility from any so-motivated individuals.

Who Says Financing Has to be Conventional?

September 8, 2010 at 10:00 AM EDT
Fluctuating market factors can create opportunities to borrow where once there were none, and can change a promising financing option into an inefficient one. The market events of 2008-2010 dramatically changed the financing landscape for senior living facilities that planned to finance expansions, renovations or new construction, leaving many providers scratching their heads. This presentation highlights "non-traditional" financing options, including HUD, Fannie Mae and USDA. These have been consistent funding sources throughout the shifting markets. This session summarizes the last year of senior living mortgage and finance activity, and offers insights into future developments, as well as best practices for applicants seeking affordable capital. Participants will come away with several specific, actionable examples of strategies for efficiently accessing capital through HUD (Sections 221d, 232 and 232/223 (f) LEAN processing), Fannie Mae and USDA business and industry programs. Case studies will detail the use of these programs.

Legal

Surrogate Medical Decision Making

July 14, 2009 at 2:00 PM EDT
End-of-life decisions are some of the most important decisions a resident can make. It is vital that this confusing area of law is understood so residents are given the opportunity to make end-of-life decisions and that these are carried out. It is also important for facilities to understand who has the authority to make medical treatment decisions as improper decision-making can lead to survey citations, as well as civil and criminal consequences.

Calculating Creatinine Clearance & Clostridium Difficile - Infection Prevention Practices in LTC

May 26, 2011 at 9:30 AM EDT
This one-hour presentation, planned in exclusive partnership with the Michigan Chapter NADONA/LTC, will begin with a discussion on the use and applicability of estimating Creatinine Clearance for dose reduction considerations in the elderly. Secondly, this presentation will address infection prevention practices in the long-term care environment. Clostridium difficile infections have escalated in healthcare organizations in the last few years, prompting both questions and concerns. Understanding the bacteria and its transmission provides the basis for decision-making to prevent new infection and to prevent person-to-person transmission. Examining the trends of antimicrobial resistance, the basics of antimicrobial stewardship and the importance of monitoring antimicrobial use prompts strategies important in preventing infections, including Clostridium Difficile. Practical application of process surveillance will assist the participant in developing a measurement system at the facility level.

HFA & AFC Criminal Background Check Laws & Rules

July 6, 2011 at 1:30 PM EDT
The Criminal Background Check laws and rules continue to cause angst and questions among HFA and AFC homes across Michigan. Criminal Background Checks are an important part of the requirements that these homes must abide by; however, the numerous changes and lack of available clarifications has muddied the water for those that must carry out the tasks relative to these requirements. While some of the changes have been put on hold, others are moving forward. On Wednesday, July 6, MCAL will host a webinar featuring Luttrell Levingston, Licensing Division Director for the Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing. During this program you will have the opportunity to participate in a presentation of information, as well as ask questions.
