The registration for this Web seminar is free through funding by the American Academy of Audiology Foundation with a grant from the Oticon Foundation
Duration: 90 Minutes
Presenter: Mary Pat Moeller, PhD
CEUs: .1 CEU
Who Should Attend: Pediatric audiologists and all who have an interest in infants with hearing loss
Level:
Instructional Level: Intermediate
Program Focus: Knowledge
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion, each participant in the Web Seminar should be able to:
1. Identify at least five developmental and environmental factors that are known to influence rates of word learning in infants with hearing loss
2. Describe key developmental shifts in young children's word learning strategies and how they are measured
3. Identify ways in which individual differences in developmental transitions can be used to guide clinical decision making
Description:
This presentation examines factors influencing word learning in children with hearing loss. Recent developmental research suggests that children develop "smarter" learning strategies as their vocabulary grows. These theories have interesting implications for outcome measurement. The discussion will focus on lexical development in three key areas:
1) Vocal development
2) Support for word learning (e.g., mother/child interaction, intervention)
3) Access to word learning (i.e., overhearing).
Clinical implications of this work will be described.
The annual Marion Downs Lecture is funded by the American Academy of Audiology Foundation with a grant from the Oticon Foundation. This program in pediatric audiology has been expanded in 2010 to include a free live Web cast of the Lecture on April 16, 2010, and complimentary on-demand viewing through spring 2011. Generous funding from the Oticon Foundation has made these new eAudiology opportunities available for audiologists internationally, and the Academy appreciates this expanded support....thank you!
