Cathy Hansell is a seasoned corporate professional, with 30 years of safety, health, environmental (SHE), product and manufacturing quality experience at several international corporations including AlliedSignal, Honeywell International, BASF, American Standard and Trane Company. She is affiliated with National Training Systems, Inc. and is also the President of Breakthrough Results. Her firm specializes in leading companies to achieve maximum business value from a superior, sustainable safety, wellness and corporate social responsibility culture (CSR). Specialty consulting areas are safety culture, culture change management, CSR, leadership coaching, pro-active integration of SHE issues into business processes, pandemic planning and six sigma/lean tools and methodologies. With Cathy's certification in CSR, recent projects include the blending and leveraging of safety culture with CSR for accelerated results in both areas. Clients include organizations in manufacturing, chemicals, energy generation and distribution, US military, construction, government and national/global safety organizations.
Most recently as the Corporate Vice President of Safety and Occupational Health at American Standard/Trane, she led a strategy throughout 500+ manufacturing, sales and service operations globally, to create a company-wide safety culture and drive for risk prevention and wellness for 62,000 employees. The breakthrough results of these efforts translated into 90% reduction in incident rates; insurance premium reductions; prevention of 22,000 injuries and cost avoidance of $152 MM in seven years and global pandemic preparedness and business continuity.
Cathy received her JD in environmental law from Rutgers University Law School in 1990, her MS in Environmental Toxicology from NYU Institute of Environmental Medicine and her BS in Environmental science/Wastewater Engineering from Cook College in 1980. She holds a certificate in Executive Safety Management through the American Society of Safety Engineers (2006) and has been a Certified Six Sigma Greenbelt and trained Black Belt since 1998. She is a Certified Quality Instructor in Crosby, Deming and Juran Quality methods (1988-1989) and is a Malcolm Baldrige Examiner (1984). Most recently, Cathy was certified in Corporate Social Responsibility, by the Centre for Sustainability Excellence, approved by the UK International Environmental and Management Association. She was also recently awarded the 2010-2011 National Association of Professional Women's Woman of the Year Award in Safety, Health & Wellness.
Ms. Hansell is a member of ORC Worldwide Consulting Group and the American Society of Safety Engineers Consulting Group. She is also a member of the American and NJ State Bar Associations; National Safety Council; Corporate EHS Roundtable. Cathy is a nominated US representative of the Safety Delegation for the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program for China (November 2010), the European CSR Consortium, Canary Islands (May 2010), the Joint United States, European Union SHE Forum, Lisbon, Portugal (2007). She was a nominated member of the New Jersey State Industrial Council (2005-2007); and Winner, Chemical Education Foundation Product Stewardship for Excellence in Industry (1999). She has lead hundreds of SHE, CSR, wellness, pandemic planning, six sigma and quality discussions and panels at global workshops and industry forum.
