(90 minutes)
This session will provide a summary of what we know in 2010 about nanomaterials exposure risks, risk management and control strategies that are currently recommended and in use, and the current state of science on the toxicity and other hazards of nanomaterials. This session will provide the attendees with information concerning gaps in our understanding of the risks associated with nanomaterials and the potential for exposure, approaches to exposure assessment in the absence of standards and guidelines, and prudent practices that members of the OHS community can implement to reduce exposure potential. Further, we will look at the issues of medical surveillance and whether we need it at this time, the use of exposure registries (why it is important to track who is working with what, when, and where), and the latest epidemiology research.

Speakers
Mr. Robert C. Adams, MS. CIH, CSP, is a Senior Manager for ENVIRON International Corporation and has more than 29 years of experience in health and safety with a particular emphasis on industrial hygiene and exposure assessments, risk analysis, health and safety program management, compliance auditing, emergency preparedness and hazardous materials, indoor air quality, asbestos expert support. Mr. Adams has been involved in several different projects related to nanomaterials. He has reviewed processes involving the use of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and provided strategic advice on sampling and analysis methods that are currently available to evaluate the presence of airborne CNTs from process emissions. He has also prepared best practices guidelines for clients to implement across their business units engaged in research and pilot scale projects using nanomaterials. Additionally, he prepared written guidance and presentation materials for researchers to detail the prudent precautions that should be taken to reduce potential risks to workers. Mr. Adams has previously presented webinars related to nanomaterials on behalf of the ASSE in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Mr. Adams is an adjunct professor at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia PA teaching courses on industrial hygiene.
Mr. Michael Holton is a Senior Associate for ENVIRON International Corporation and has more than six years of diverse experience in environmental health and safety in both the public and private sectors. He has a Master of Science in Environmental Health with a concentration on exposure, epidemiology and risk from Harvard University and his work has focused on industrial hygiene, exposure assessment, risk analysis, compliance auditing, green building accreditation, food safety, indoor environmental quality and litigation support. He has been involved in several different projects studying health outcomes related to environmental and occupational exposures.
