Front line nurses have a huge impact on the quality and safety of their patients’ care. Too often, they don’t recognize, and are not recognized for, their contributions. Nurses need to understand how quality is being defined and measured, so they can (1) improve their own practice and (2) support overall improvement efforts. This presentation will review a set of nursing sensitive hospital quality measures that were tested with consumers; describe how consumers responded to them; and suggest ways that front line nurses can work on learning and improvement on the most critical measures.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1. Name three general areas in which nurses have a big impact on quality, and give a specific measure as an example.
2. Identify at least two ways that they can have an impact on their own quality and the quality of their practice setting overall.
