May 5, 2009

Duration: 60 minutes

Faculty: Michael R. Callahan, JD; Jay A. Gregory, MD, FACS; Susan M. Nedza, MD, MBA, FACEP

Physicians have an important role in patient safety. Because you are seen as leaders in improving efforts to make care safer, your role calls for a clear understanding of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 as well as Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs) created by the Act. As a medical staff organization leader, you can be actively involved in preparing other physicians in establishing Patient Safety Evaluation Systems (PSESs) described in the Act and in selecting PSOs to which hospitals subscribe. This compelling American Medical Association (AMA) webinar— presented by nationally known experts—will show you how to help your peers grasp PSESs and optimize physician participation in PSOs.

This important learning opportunity focuses on:

1. Understanding the scope of PSESs and PSOs.

2. How to participate in hospital or group practice construction of PSESs and PSOs.

3. Identifying the entities authorized and created by the Patient Safety Act.

4. How the Act could influence peer review and ongoing professional practice evaluation.
